ER&D was developed by the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) as a union-sponsored, research-based professional development program designed to help local unions deliver high-quality training on their own or in collaboration with school districts. The program meets the criteria for 'high quality professional development' as defined in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). All ER&D courses are based on scientific research that has been translated for classroom application.
In 2002 BEA sponsored three members to attend training seminars in AFT ER&D Program. They became certified instructors and the first ER&D course, Foundations of Effective Teaching I, was offered in Billings in the fall of 2003.
During the summer of 2004, the BEA & School District 2 jointly sponsored six additional members to attend AFT ER&D training to become qualified to teach ER&D courses.
Our Local Site Coordinator is BEA member Kathy Rumph. She is a certified ER&D instructor and is responsible for the overall management of the BEA ER&D program. Kathy teaches Managing Anti-Social Behavior, leads local training classes, plans program expansion, and is the ER&D spokesperson with union leaders, members and district administrators.
To date ten BEA members have completed ER&D instructor certification. They are trained to teach Foundations in Effective Teaching I, Thinking Math I, Thinking Math II, Reading Comprehension, Managing Anti-Social Behavior, Strategies that Work for All Disciplines and School, Family & Community.
The courses are offered through School District 2 Community Education and can be taken to fulfill teachers' professional development requirements and to earn step-up credit and OPI renewal units.
See the links at the left for course descriptions and for course schedules with dates & times, costs, and credits to be earned.
